2. Melancholia: Kirsten Dunst and ‘True Blood’s’ Alexander Skarsgard star in this haunting end of the world drama. It follows a beautiful wedding that ends in catastrophe. It’s been ranked by many critics as one of the year’s best.
3. Margin Call: Film’s about corporate peril aren’t normally this compelling. At first glance it may seem as though the story is simply about men in suits arguing over money but this stellar work is not to be missed. A remarkable cast, striking dialogue, and a unique narrative voice make this film about more than just the 2008 financial crisis.
4. Shame: Though the NC-17 film is sure to make people uncomfortable. It’s a poignant and highly informative story. Unsettling yet remarkable, it centers on a corporate loner (Michael Fassbender) who battles a horrific sex addiction. You may never want to watch it again but seeing it once is a wise choice.

5. Moneyball: Not your typical sports movie, Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances in this amazing true story. Undeniably witty dialogue and a compelling plot are just some of ‘Moneyball’s’ distinguishing elements.
6. The Descendants: George Clooney stars in what is not your average family film by any means. Though it centers on an extremely upsetting situation, the Hawaiian dramedy manages to be uplifting. You’ll laugh, sob, and learn the importance of not wasting another second of your life being bitter.
